Weird Sex Science Fact of the Week: Orgasms Can Give You Amnesia

Did you know you can blow your own mind with an orgasm?  Roughly 3-5 people out of 100,000 every year experience a transient form of amnesia called transient global amnesia after an orgasm.  In a documented 1964 case, a man climaxed during sex and immediately forget where he was or that he was even having sex.   So… yeah, that could be awkward, especially if it’s a one night stand.

Doctors don’t have definitive answers yet for this rare medical phenomenon but believe it may be caused by too much internal pressure in the jugular vein (neck), which deprives the brain of oxygen.  Nor do they know why sex can trigger this strange event, although other strenuous activities, like weight-lifting, can cause it too.   Another mystery is why TGA never recurs: you may get it once but it won’t happen again.

Most patients fully recover without any symptoms beyond the temporary amnesia.  So except for the surprise you might feel if you inexplicably find yourself in a compromising position with saggy, well-satisfied genitals, you’ll live to climax another day, no harm done.

But now I have to wonder — if people could, would they choose to experiment with transient global amnesia?  Are there people who’d choose to blow their own minds with sex?
