Ask Gloria About BDSM: Bondage Safety Tips During Anal

Dear Gloria,

How do you safely do bondage and anal when a ball gag is involved?

Thanks,

Bonjour Bound,

Simple questions deserve simple but meaningful answers, and several of my BDSM friends chimed in with their solutions on this bondage conundrum.

This tip is great as long as your hands or fingers aren’t compromised by bondage gloves or ties that limit hand/finger movement.

NM:  I use finger snapping as a safeword when I am bound and gagged.

This one is great for pet-lovers who have toys on hand — if not, it’s still worth a visit to the pet aisle of your grocery store to see which one makes the best noise when dropped.
SM: Hold a dog toy- if ya drop it the wheeze they give out is tremendous (ask the dungeon I cracked up one night).
BED Board Member Queen Raini also had a super-cute idea
I use a portable doorbell. $20 at Walmart. One ring for yellow. Multiple rings for red.

To summarize: there may be times and situations where a person can’t verbalize a safe word, whether it’s because of the type of bondage they’re doing (hoods can muffle speech too) or even the headspace they’re in.   So always have a plan B and even a plan C, and prepare to innovate.

If you have wooden floors, you can drop keys; if you have carpets, use some kind of a bell or other device you can tap to make a  loud noise.

If you don’t have a floor, I don’t know where or how you live, but you still need ways to communicate “stop now please,” either by triggering sounds, buying inexpensive noisemakers like bells, or by using your body.  Maybe you can stomp the ground with one foot, depending on how you are bound.  (Some tops will leave 1 foot or hand free for signaling.)  You can use your fingers to flash signals or sign.  Or your dom could tie a bell to one of your toes or fingers, which you can shake vigorously to get his attention.

Have you ever tried humming a song?  Your words may be muffled or totally garbled, but throat-humming “Stop in the Name of Love” would definitely send a safety message.

So many things! So many ways!  So much BDSM fun!

hugs,

Gloria
