This is Part 2 of a 3-part series exploring gender assumptions and archetypes in BDSM. Part 1 examined why male submissives are invisible in research despite thriving markets. This post unpacks female submissive archetypes. Part 3 will explore male submissive archetypes from clinical experience.
If you think all femsubs are the same, are you even on the Internet? Femsubs are as variable as any other broad category of human beings. There is no single code of behavior they are bound to follow.
Informed Consent
It is, indeed, one of the biggest misconceptions about “how to do BDSM,” that people often assume that “a femsub is always *xyz*.”
No, a femsub is a human first, and the sub part is her choice, not her biological destiny, thank you.
At least, that’s been the consensual BDSM code over the past 50 years. Without the person’s eager consent, a submission is not valid. Both the sub and the dom must feel they’re getting what they need out of their relationship for it to remain emotionally safe.
This short glossary of archetypal roles will teach you about the millions of women in the world who eagerly choose the submissive role in BDSM.
Side note: This is how we do it in the U.S. Look into other cultural traditions — in Asia, Africa, Central and South America — and their BDSM traditions vary from ours.
Women Just Want to Have Fun
Female submission is as varied as the women who love it. For women who accept that they are wired this way, BDSM offers access to their authentic sexual desires. Submission allows them to experience a primal, uninhibited version of themselves. It’s ultimately an ecstatic, emotionally centered, and psychologically immersed voyage.
I’m going to unpack some of the main archetypes you are likely to encounter in the kink communities of the United States.
The Main Archetypes
Alpha Sub
Alpha Femsubs tend to be high-achieving, assertive, take-charge people who find release and pleasure in sexual submission. They may be CEOs, lawyers, doctors, or people who make decisions all day and carry heavy responsibility. In the bedroom, they may crave that someone else take control so they can finally let go. The submission isn’t about weakness; it’s about a reprieve from responsibility, a voyage to a place of intensely inward experiences through BDSM acts.
In other cases, they might be a male dominant’s wife or long-time significant other who can claim the top spot in a poly or Leather hierarchy. They may join their partner in dominating other people, maybe have subs of their own, or may claim special privileges (always shares the bed with the dom, for example). It all depends on the people involved, their desires, their flexibility, and — above all — their consent.
This archetype breaks the myths that submissives are passive or weak-willed. Alpha Subs are often the exact opposite – powerful, competent, demanding people who choose to submit as an intentional counterbalance to their daily lives.
Brat
A brat is a submissive who gets off on playful disobedience.
This category tends to be gendered and edging on ageplay because most brats pretend to be younger than their real age. They say and do deliberately naughty, breaking rules on purpose, making little jokes they know might earn them a spanking. And that is exactly where the thrill is. It’s about instigating your own punishment, but purely for fun. When her Dominant catches her misbehaving, she gets excited for the fun to follow (scoldings, spankings, etc.). Naturally, brats need partners who enjoy the game of pushing back, giving them punishments that make them aroused, and play the role of “Brat Tamer,” a Dominant who enjoys the humor and the entire playful scenario.
Good Girl/Good Boy
The polar opposite of a brat. Good Girls (and Good Boys) are the ultimate “people pleasers,” especially when their person is the dom! They may derive erotic gratification simply from pleasing their Dominant and following orders without question. Where a brat pushes boundaries for fun, a Good Girl finds joy in obedience itself.
The big pay-off in this archetype is when their Dominant is satisfied with them and utters praise, compliments, and generally lets the Good Girl/Boy soak up a lot of verbal love for their eagerness to please. Many have described it as a “praise kink,” a deep emotional need to be told they are good and are truly pleasing their partner. That is a moment of intense excitement and emotional fulfillment for them. I said more about this kink in “What is Praise Kink?”
Smart-Ass Masochist (SAM)
A SAM is basically a brat with a pain kink. They may also come on snarky and sarcastic, just to test the mettle of a dom person. We used to say people like that were “cruising for a bruising.”
SAM’s like their kinks feisty! They know they have a high tolerance for pain/discomfort. A SAM may enjoy showing off their endurance by accepting physical challenges from friends at clubs or events. Her natural counterpart is often a powerful or feisty Dominant who can come back strong to her challenges.
The SAM identity is similar to a brat, but with the potential for heavy BDSM play, such as a whipping. Once you identify as a “masochist,” you let people know that you are down for heavy sensation play.
Service Submissive
Service subs find genuine joy in providing services to their Dominant — whether that’s sexual service, household tasks, professional help, or anything in between. They live to serve and find their pleasure in being useful and helpful.
Some service subs are versatile and will top their dominant if/when the dom asks for it. It’s not considered switching because it is still at the dom’s whim, done exactly as the dom requests.
Masochist
A masochist experiences sexual gratification from receiving pain or humiliation (physical, emotional, or psychological). In the Old Days, people thought their craving for extreme sensation was a mental illness. In fact, it’s about being neurodivergent. Masochists have been studied enough for us to know that their brain chemistry functions differently during scenes. This isn’t about being broken or damaged — it’s about pleasure that comes through different wiring that allows them to smilingly endure a sensation that would make another person shriek.
Research has long since proven that masochists don’t have higher rates of mental health issues than the general population. What they do have is wonderfully complex nervous systems we still don’t fully understand.
Rope Bunny
A rope bunny is often a model (or experimenter) who loves to be tied up and restrained. She is the bottom to a “rigger,” the person who puts her in rope.
A rope bunny is not necessarily traditionally submissive. She just loves the pleasure of being bound, the vulnerability of helplessness, or sometimes the power of flying in Shibari poses. The trust factors involved in rope play are huge: the bunny gives her trust to the rigger to keep every limb and tendon safe from injury, to monitor her intently and ensure that nothing goes wrong or that any rope is out of place on this journey.
Slave
In BDSM language, a Slave practices Total Power Exchange (TPE) with a Dominant. Theoretically, power exchange is 24/7 and touches every aspect of life.
In reality, the Master/slave relationship evolves into whatever suits the couple best. The slave and Master work out their agreements consensually, each bringing their own lists of wants, desires, limits, and boundaries. If they have kids, if one or both have busy careers, if they are enmeshed with family, church, or sports, any one of these, and so many more normal parts of life, WILL impact their kink lifestyle. Childless adults have more flexibility, but, again, real life, real responsibilities, demand that you act more or less in line with the society you are in.
I’m not saying you can’t wear your Leathers to a PTA meeting, just saying that for most of us in the kink Lifestyle, there is a time and place for everything, and BDSM often has to go to the private whispers and giggles space when you and your SO are wandering around Costco or the plant nursery.
Pet/Primal Prey
Growing in popularity as a more sensual, amusing way to play, Pet Play involves one partner adopting animal characteristics (cat, dog, pony, etc.) while the other takes on an owner or “handler” role.
Primal play is the wilder cousin — it’s about letting loose animal instincts, raw emotions, and physical intensity. You could be a delightful little kitty. But you could also be a very loud! even a tiger! There’s no script; just raw, emotional sexual energy and a good imagination.
One thing you might wish to do if you’re going to be feral is let the people playing with you know. When I was still starting out I was playing with a nice kinky couple I’d reently met. Suddenly, the woman turned into a feral cat, yowling and clawing the air. I’d like to say it was the cat’s meow but I backed off before she clawed my eyes out.
The Real Point
None of these categories is “better” or “more submissive” than others. The idea that there is one true way to be submissive and that every femsub should be a clone is beyond creepy.
An alpha sub isn’t less of a submissive than a service sub. A brat isn’t lightweight compared to a SAM. They’re different people who delight in different submissive archetypes because they align perfectly with who they are.
The beauty is the variety. The power is in the choice.
