One of the greatest revelations of my career has been discovering kink communities around the globe. Today’s blog includes data that form a snapshot of BDSM/Fetish communities worldwide.
The cultures differ. The politics and religions differ. Public attitudes toward sex run from open acceptance to criminal punishment. Yet the same handful of desires keeps surfacing in societies that never influenced one another.
The lesson never changes. Where there are people, there will be kinky and fetish behaviors.
Visibility is Not the Same as Existence
U.S. BDSM/Fetish
The most visible version has been the American scene. In the U.S., kinky people fill hotels and convention centers for long weekend events. San Francisco alone draws an estimated 250-400k to the Folsom Street Fair every September.
For the past 50 years, the American community has also built a safety framework so sound that the mainstream has absorbed it. We demand consent, negotiation, and intentionality. The mainstream and many offshore communities have adopted those ethics.
Documenting Fetish and Kink Communities
Before you look at the map below, please remember that the vast majority of adults never join fetish or BDSM communities. They enact desires with partners or while self-pleasuring. We will never know how many of us are really out there.
What we can count is the number of groups and the number of people who have participated in BDSM/Fetish community events globally. This map illustrates the well-documented communities.

What the Map of BDSM Communities Teaches Us
This is a documentation map, not a prevalence map. The shading reflects who has internet access and English-language skills as much as it reflects actual community size.
Organizations Are Our Best Metric
More than a thousand BDSM and fetish groups operate openly in the United States and are known and documented. That leaves out the untold numbers of groups that organize and dissolve in secret, never landing on a public list. A kinky meet-up group pops up in a small town, and for mundane reasons, it disbands a year later. No one outside of the participants even knew it existed.
You Can’t See Them, But They Are There
The blank and “emerging” countries on the map are not devoid of adult fetishists, submissives, and dominants. They may be devoid of public spaces for the enjoyment of kinky adults, though, and that lack of socialization makes them invisible.
Look at the map again, and you’ll see that Nigeria appears barely relevant. Yet it is known that they have longstanding kinky communities there. And, according to a kinky Nigerian friend, their communities started before ours. I’d love to see documentation (if it exists), but for now, I’ll take my friend’s word. In fact, I’d love to know how they identify and whether they do a lot of the same things we do, or whether they have a different take on fetish/kink.
Desire does not change at a border. I’ve shared previously that there may be markers for sexual kinks and fetishes in our DNA. If it’s true, then one day we will be able to say with certainty that it is genetic, and that will, of course, easily explain why this is a global phenomenon.
At our roots, we are one human family. We share the human gene pool. What changes from culture to culture is whether people are free to admit it, document it, and find community.
