Important BDSM Studies of 2025 – Casey & Sagarin

For over 150 years, scientific literature dismissed BDSM power relationships as morally depraved at best, pathological at worst.

Now, the top journal in the field, the Archives of Sexual Behavior, has published the first rigorous academic framework that examines BDSM power relationship structures as legitimate, functional relationship models.

This study uses the umbrella term “Authority Transfer” (AT) for the Kink/BDSM Community’s power relationships. AT includes Total Power Exchange (TPE), 24/7, Lifestyle, Master or Mistress/slave, and other relationship forms unique to Kink communities.

What Is Authority Transfer?

The term Authority Transfer was popularized by co-author Kevin Casey, who has used it in workshops and conferences since the early 2000s. The study defines Authority Transfer as a relationship in which one person voluntarily gives up control over some or all aspects of their life to another person, who assumes responsibility for managing those aspects.

Before this study, academic literature lacked a formal framework for BDSM power relationships. This study changes that, opening the door to more nuanced and culturally informed studies on BDSM

The study also notably distinguished AT from patriarchal partnerships, egalitarian partnerships, and coercive/abusive arrangements. AT is characterized by negotiation and informed consent — a different paradigm entirely.

I honestly love the precise clinical coldness of “Authority Transfer.” As I struggle here to adjust my blog style to meet the strict new algorithms imposed on everything erotic and intimate, I smile at the little Easter Egg of getting a new term that is clinically impeccable.

Why This Study Matters

This study offers three foundational contributions that other scientists can build on.

Depathologization.

This research confirms that 24/7, Dominance and Submission (D/s), Master/slave (M/s), Total Power Exchange (TPE), and Lifestyle relationships are not pathological. The study contends that these consensual and negotiated relationships fall within normal human variation and warrant serious study.

Formal Framework.

Authority Transfer gives professionals concrete tools for their work. Therapists, educators, physicians, and sexual health professionals now have a reference point for understanding power-based relationships. Equally exciting, other scientists now have empirical evidence to gather, tests to run, and new approaches to research on BDSM in general.

Paradigm Shift.

Most significantly, this research repositions BDSM power relationships entirely. The study moves BDSM out of the realm of mental illness into the realm of expected human diversity.

Spreading evidence about the natural diversity in human sexual behavior is the path to change. Letting adults learn facts instead of accepting myths is how to keep them healthy, physically and emotionally. What could the future look like for kinky people? More freedom and less shame? Or the opposite?

Future Research Starts Here

In some ways, this study is a beginning rather than a conclusion. Casey & Sagarin gave us a landmark paper that will allow us to study BDSM relationships at depths previously impossible. Whether this becomes the gold standard depends on what comes next.

The academic conversation and controversy have already begun. Hopefully, other scientists will step forward to test the legitimacy of Authority Transfer, and from there it can continue to expand the field, with studies across numerous social and hard sciences. To me, it’s a beautiful hope worth hanging onto!
